The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) announced the appointment of Michael D. Farley as its new Chief Development Officer on August 30, 2010. Sterling Martin Associates is happy to have partnered with NBPTS in recruiting Michael to his new role.

Farley has served as chief operating officer of the Lupus Foundation of America for the past two years. He is a seasoned development and fundraising executive with more than 25 years experience leading mission-driven nonprofit organizations, and building comprehensive fund development strategies.

“We are delighted to have Michael, a Certified Fundraising Executive, lead our development efforts,” said Joseph A. Aguerrebere, NBPTS president and chief executive officer. “His depth of experience in strategy, management and building high performing fundraising teams will be a great asset to our organization.”

Prior to joining the Lupus Foundation, Farley served as chief corporate and community relations officer and interim CEO for the American Diabetes Association where he was responsible for directing a $178 million annual fund raising program and creating a Product Integration Team to maximize branding and production integration of agency initiatives. Farley also worked for USO World Headquarters where he helped create a $40 million contributed revenue stream to support 125 field-based centers stateside and worldwide in support of U.S. Service members and their families. Prior to that, he led disaster fundraising for the American Red Cross at its national headquarters in Washington, D.C.

Farley’s diverse experience in senior management roles has allowed him to develop an in-depth understanding of creating and executing organizational strategy and building comprehensive fund development programs that advance mission-driven organizations.

Farley earned his master’s degree in political science and urban affairs from Saint Louis University in St. Louis, Mo. He completed his undergraduate studies in political science at Loyola/Marymount University in Los Angeles, Calif.

“It is an honor to be a colleague with such a wonderful team of professionals who are transforming the teaching profession across America,” said Farley.

NBPTS is an independent, nonprofit, nonpartisan and nongovernmental organization. NBPTS advances the quality of teaching and learning by developing professional standards for accomplished teaching; creating and administering National Board Certification, a voluntary system to certify teachers who meet those standards; and integrating certified teachers into educational reform efforts. Today, more than 82,000 National Board Certified Teachers are modeling teaching that supports better learning and better schools. For more information about NBPTS, visit the NBPTS Web site at www.nbpts.org.

Russell, Director of the Executive Coaching and Leadership Development Program at the University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business, suggests several things you can do to help restore balance in your otherwise overwhelmed, overworked, and overloaded life. Broadly stated: (1) Set some goals that are important for your personal life; (2) manage the clutter whether it’s in your office, home or somewhere else; (3) disconnect — yes, disconnect — every so often from your smart phone, computer, or other connection; (4) learn to say “no” when “no” is appropriate; and (5) ask for help when you need it. As Career Coach says, “Don’t suffer in silence.”
