Below are three Case Studies of searches for which Sterling Martin has been engaged.
The Sterling Martin team was asked to find a new President and CEO for Gifts In Kind International (GIKI), a leading nonprofit organization dedicated to helping people and communities by distributing corporate product donations to qualified charities throughout the United States and internationally. Although ranked among the 30 largest nonprofit organizations by the Chronicle of Philanthropy, the organization was unknown in many circles. It sought an executive with both nonprofit and corporate experience who could drive the organization’s new strategy toward an e-commerce model with on-line ordering and web-based catalogue for charities. GIKI needed someone who could represent the organization externally and drive change in a very resource-constrained environment. The Sterling Martin team developed a broad recruitment and outreach strategy to corporations, nonprofit organizations, associations, government and academia. We successfully recruited a transformative leader with a proven track record of leading organizations through significant change and financial difficult periods.
Sterling Martin Associates understands that no two organizations are alike and tailors each search to the client.
The Sterling Martin team was hired to find the next President and CEO of The Washington Campus (TWC), a top national nonprofit organization founded by the late L. William Seidman, former Chairman of the FDIC. TWC provides educational programs for executives and MBA students about “how Washington works”. The qualifications needed were unique in that the organization sought a visionary executive with experience in education, public policy, and business because the organization had started to experience a decline in program enrollment due to increased competition. Sterling Martin Associates developed a search strategy that spanned higher education, government, nonprofit organizations, and the corporate sector. Our placement was an innovative leader with experience working as an entrepreneur, in public policy for a major Ivy League university, in the White House, on Capitol Hill and also as a college professor.
Sterling Martin Associates’ experience also extends to flourishing organizations that are looking to find the next leader after an integral team member departs or retires.
The National Association of Children’s Hospitals and Related Institutions (NACHRI) hired the Sterling Martin team to replace their revered Vice President of Public Policy, an individual who both inside and outside the organization was described as “irreplaceable.” The organization was facing several pressing legislative and policy issues that required a seasoned lobbyist familiar with healthcare issues. The Sterling Martin team developed a comprehensive search strategy reaching out to executives at national healthcare-related associations, hospital systems, public policy/lobbying shops, government agencies, state hospital associations, Capitol Hill staff and nonprofit organizations. Our placement was an executive with a PhD in Health Policy, who
represented a major university at the federal, state, and local levels addressing a variety of policy issues.
